Why Suspense/Thriller???

In a previous post, HERE, I mentioned the 100 word microfiction challenge I competed in. I recently competed again back in April 2023 and this time it went a very different way (see my writing piece below). I got a genre of suspense/thriller. The two I am learning go hand in hand a lot. It really opened my eyes up to the suspense of the world and how intriguing it all is. When a person can say "I did not see that coming" the writers gives themselves a huge pat on the back. FOR ME THOUGH it is more like a HELL YEAH I DID IT with a tear in my eye and a cloud nine feeling!

Honestly though each story I start that isn’t sci-fi or fantasy it always goes toward a suspense or thriller type storyline. I want that HOLY MOLY moment for my readers. I think it started before this little 100 word story, but I was afraid to write about it. Well here it is:

*** Prompt: Suspense/thriller, Turning on a fan, Done

"I try to ignore the noise on the other side of the wall by turning on the fan and staring at blades as they oscillate counterclockwise. Sitting up on the bed, I listen carefully for further indication to intervene. Not having a choice, I bang on the adjoining door. It swings open and before the young lady says anything I see the issue.

“I’m done, he's all yours bosslady,” she motions to the bed.

I approach the man bound to a yellow chair; he barely has time to recognize my betrayal before the smell of blood fills the air."

I want the "oh I did not see that coming" reaction in my work. When I tell people about my story ideas I usually get….”well ok then,” “I really like that,” “Really?” “I would totally read that,” or most recent “This is so delicious.” Or my favorite the nervous laugh!!!

I think a lot of the genre premise of Suspense and thrillers are based on betrayal and hurt. I wonder if it says something about me…. I’m still healing!

  1. What a great mini story with room for more! I’d read this in a short story or even a full novel.
