Writing for Word Count Challenges

When I say challenge I MEAN CHALLENGE. 100 Word Microfiction Challenge??? Is that even a Story??? Most writers would say NO! However, you have to look beyond just what is on the “paper” and see the words that could be developed from them.

I have competed in a 100 word microfiction challenge twice now. If you go even one word over the 100 word criteria you were disqualified. I got good feedback, but I did not place for this story. The story was unfinished as the judges added…. How does one FINISH a story in 100 words? It is so much harder then you can imagine.

FIRST Prompt criteria: Action and/or Adventure / Teaching a class / gold

"Utah 2006. Desh repelled through the roof of the Nanotechnology Course, being held outside of Salt Lake City, in all black with a mask over his face. 26 students were flabbergasted when Dr. Goldfein, the oldest and most brilliant professor on campus, was then pulled up through an opening in the dome shaped ceiling. Desh never asked specifics; his goal is mission success and that’s it, or so he thought.

“Good to see you Ol’ Chap,” Dr. Goldfein immediately spoke, “who sent you?”

“You will see soon enough,” unbeknownst to Desh those words were directed to his estranged father."

***Note: I will share the second one in a later post, which is so much better!***

What’s next you ask??? Well, I signed up for for the 250 Word Microfiction Challenge on 8 December 2023. If you want to really challenge yourself you can do it by clicking on the picture below.
